Share
Smooth, buttery, and made with love — these creamy mashed potatoes are the perfect side dish for family dinners, holiday gatherings, or a cozy Sunday supper on the Front Porch.
Ingredients
- 3 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 1 teaspoon salt, plus more for the cooking water
- ½ cup unsalted butter
- ¾ cup whole milk, warmed
- ¼ cup sour cream
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- Chopped fresh parsley, for garnish (optional)
Instructions
1. Cook the Potatoes
Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a generous pinch of salt.
Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to a gentle boil. Cook for 15–20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork tender.
2. Drain and Dry
Drain the potatoes well and return them to the warm pot for 1–2 minutes over low heat. This helps remove excess moisture for fluffier mashed potatoes.
3. Mash
Mash the potatoes using a potato masher until mostly smooth.
Add the butter and stir until melted.
Gradually mix in the warm milk, sour cream, garlic powder (if using), salt, and pepper until the potatoes reach your desired consistency.
4. Taste and Adjust
Season with additional salt and pepper as needed.
5. Serve
Transfer to a serving bowl. Top with a pat of butter and sprinkle with fresh parsley, if desired.
Front Porch Tip ☕
Warm the milk before adding it to the potatoes. Cold milk can cool the potatoes too quickly and make them less creamy.
