🥣 Front Porch Southern Cheesy Grits

🥣 Front Porch Southern Cheesy Grits

Creamy, buttery, and full of Southern comfort — a warm bowl of grits has a way of bringing people together. Whether enjoyed at breakfast or served as a side dish, this classic recipe is a reminder that simple foods often create the best memories.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups chicken broth (or water)
  • 1 cup stone-ground or old-fashioned grits
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup milk or heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese (optional, for extra creaminess)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Grits

Bring chicken broth and salt to a boil in a medium saucepan.

Slowly whisk in the grits to prevent lumps from forming.

2. Cook Until Creamy

Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook according to package directions (usually 20–30 minutes for old-fashioned grits), stirring occasionally until thick and creamy.

3. Add the Goodness

Stir in butter, milk or cream, cheddar cheese, and cream cheese if using. Continue stirring until melted and smooth.

Season with additional salt and pepper to taste.

4. Serve Warm

Spoon into bowls and serve immediately with a little extra butter on top and crumbled bacon if desired.

Front Porch Tip ☕

For the creamiest grits, cook them slowly and give them time to absorb the liquid. Good Southern grits are worth the wait!

A Memory from the Porch 🌻

A bowl of warm grits is more than just a recipe — it’s a reminder of slow mornings, family breakfasts, and conversations that last longer than the meal itself. Sometimes the simplest dishes are the ones that bring us home.
