🥧 Front Porch Southern Buttermilk Pie
Share
Sweet, creamy, and delightfully old-fashioned — this classic Southern buttermilk pie is a reminder that the best recipes are often the ones made with simple ingredients and shared with the people we love.
Ingredients
- 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
- 1½ cups granulated sugar
- ½ cup butter, softened
- 3 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (plus extra for sprinkling, if desired)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Pie
Preheat oven to 350°F. Place the pie crust in a 9-inch pie dish and set aside.
2. Make the Filling
In a large bowl, cream together sugar and softened butter until light and combined.
Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
Stir in buttermilk, vanilla, lemon juice, flour, salt, and nutmeg until smooth.
3. Bake
Pour the filling into the prepared pie crust.
Sprinkle a little extra nutmeg over the top if desired.
Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until the center is set but still has a slight jiggle.
4. Cool and Serve
Allow the pie to cool completely before slicing. Serve at room temperature or chilled.
Front Porch Tip ☕
For the best flavor and texture, let the pie rest for several hours before serving. The filling becomes even creamier as it cools.
A Memory from the Porch 🌻
Buttermilk pie is a reminder of a simpler time — when desserts were made from pantry staples, neighbors stopped by for a visit, and a homemade pie waiting on the counter meant someone cared enough to make something special.
