🍦Front Porch Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream
Share
Creamy, sweet, and made the old-fashioned way — this homemade vanilla ice cream is a reminder that some of the best memories are made with simple ingredients and time spent together.
Ingredients
- 2 cups heavy whipping cream
- 2 cups whole milk
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 5 large egg yolks (optional, for a richer custard-style ice cream)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Ice Cream Base
In a medium saucepan, warm the milk, heavy cream, sugar, and salt over medium heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Do not bring to a boil.
2. Add the Egg Yolks (Optional)
For a richer, old-fashioned custard ice cream, whisk the egg yolks in a separate bowl. Slowly add a little of the warm cream mixture to the yolks while whisking constantly.
Pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring until the mixture slightly thickens and coats the back of a spoon.
3. Add Vanilla
Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
Allow the mixture to cool, then cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
4. Churn the Ice Cream
Pour the chilled mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions.
5. Freeze Until Ready
For a soft-serve texture, enjoy immediately. For firmer ice cream, transfer to a freezer-safe container and freeze for 2–4 hours.
Front Porch Flavor Ideas 🍓🍫
Make it your own by adding:
- Fresh strawberries
- Chocolate chips
- Crushed cookies
- Chopped pecans
- Caramel swirl
- Peach pieces for a Southern peach ice cream
Front Porch Tip ☕
A little patience makes a big difference. Letting the ice cream base chill completely before churning creates a smoother, creamier texture.
