🧈 Front Porch Southern Buttermilk Biscuits

A Little Taste of Home From the Front Porch

There are some recipes that feel like home before you even take the first bite.

Southern buttermilk biscuits are one of those recipes.

They remind us of Sunday mornings, family gatherings, warm kitchens, and conversations that last a little longer than planned. Whether served with butter and jam, smothered in gravy, or enjoyed alongside a favorite meal, homemade biscuits have a way of bringing people together.

In the South, biscuits aren't just food.

They're hospitality on a plate.

So grab your flour, warm up the oven, and let's make a batch to share.

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ cup cold butter, cubed
  • 1 cup cold buttermilk (plus a little extra if needed)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter for brushing the tops

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and baking soda.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs. (A few small pieces of butter are what make biscuits flaky and tender!)
  4. Slowly add the cold buttermilk and gently stir until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix.
  5. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently fold it over itself a few times. This helps create those beautiful layers.
  6. Pat the dough about ¾-inch thick and cut out biscuits using a biscuit cutter or the rim of a glass.
  7. Place biscuits close together on a baking sheet or in a cast iron skillet.
  8. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until golden on top.
  9. Brush with melted butter while warm.

Porch Tips

  • For extra-tall biscuits, avoid twisting the cutter when cutting the dough — press straight down and lift.
  • If you like sweeter biscuits, add an extra teaspoon of sugar.
  • Serve warm with honey butter, homemade jam, sausage gravy, or alongside your favorite Southern meal.

A Little Porch Wisdom

Some of the best memories aren't made at fancy restaurants.

They're made in kitchens.

They're made while someone is rolling out dough, while coffee is brewing, and while family gathers around the table waiting for that first warm biscuit to come out of the oven.

Recipes like this are more than instructions.

They're little pieces of tradition passed from one kitchen to another.

So pull up a chair, pour yourself a cup of coffee, and enjoy a little taste of Southern comfort.

From our porch to yours...

Happy baking. ☕🧈
